Join us every first Tuesday for story time at Hemisfair.  Each month young explorers learn and play around the theme of being different while being included.  A short story is shared followed by a hands-on learning activity. This month's book is "The Reflection In Me" by Marc Colagiovanni. The book is a story of self-love that teaches children that their physical layer is just that -- one layer -- and below it lies a rich tapestry of attributes that make them unique and wonderful! Black History Film Series August – My Nappy Roots: A Journey Through Black Hair-itage

My Nappy Roots" explores the politics, culture and history of African American hair. Is there such a thing as "Good and Bad" hair? The film uses the evolution of black hairstyles as a touchstone to address the broader struggle of African American people in their search for social control, identity and economic independence. In 1962, African-American classical pianist Don Shirley employs tough, out-of-work bouncer Frank "Tony Lip" Vallelonga to be his driver for a concert tour into the Deep South states. Tony accepts the job and they begin their trek armed with "The Negro Motorist Green Book," a guide for safe travel through America's racial segregation.... a ride that would change both their lives. Join us for a tour on the beautiful San Antonio River for a 100 minute cruise exploring San Antonio 's Black History along the Riverwalk.  Our trip starts by meeting at 218 S. Presa in La Villita. Please arrive at 218 S. Presa 30-45 minutes ahead of the boat departure time. We then travel through history on a north route through the Museum Reach to the Pearl then back downtown to the Alamo, Convention Center and back to La Villita.  You will be surprised at the continued African American influence in San Antonio. Lab technician Vivien Thomas (1910-1985) an African-American without a college degree, is a gifted mechanic and tool-maker with hands splendidly adept at surgery. In 1941, cardiologist Alfred Blalock (1899-1964) and Thomas take on the challenge of blue babies and invent bypass surgery. In defiance of custom and Jim Crow, Blalock brings Thomas into the surgery to advise him, but when Life Magazine and kudos come, Thomas is excluded. Will he receive his due?
