DESCRIPTION:JOIN SAAACAM’s CEO Deborah Omowale Jarmon on February 26th in conversation with investigative journalist Cheryl W. Thompson as they discuss her book\, “Forgotten Souls: The Search for the Lost Tuskegee Airmen”\, a presentation by The San Antonio Book Festival. \nThis important book explores the stories of 27 Black pilots from the Tuskegee Airmen who disappeared during World War II\, exploring the racism they faced\, the reasons for their loss\, and the lasting impact on their families who often received little to no closure from the military. \n\nThompson\, the daughter of a Tuskegee Airman\, uses extensive research and interviews to bring these forgotten heroes and their unsolved grief to light. She teaches investigative reporting as an associate professor at George Washington University and serves as board president of Investigative Reporters and Editors\, a 6\,100-member organization whose mission is to improve the quality of investigative journalism.\n  \nVenue Location: TPR’s Malú and Carlos Alvarez Theater\, 321 W. Commerce\, SATX 78205 \nPARKING IS AVAILABLE IN THE CITY TOWER PARKING GARAGE located at 60 N. Flores St.\, where parking will be validated post-event for the first 150 attendees. \nDoors open at 6:00pm\, and the program begins at 6:30pm. \nThis event is FREE\, but registration is required to reserve your seat. Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase on-site while quantities last. \nThis event is part of the SAAACAM Author’s Series\, which is a quarterly event dedicated to showcasing authors whose works illuminate the stories\, culture\, and experiences of Black life in San Antonio and the surrounding areas. Through readings\, discussions\, and community dialogue\, the series highlights the richness of local Black history while fostering deeper understanding and appreciation of its impact on our shared heritage. \nSABF unites readers and writers in a celebration of books and the essential ideas and issues they raise. In their Get Lit series\, they build community at year-round events\, featuring an author and their new book in conversations with a respected figure in San Antonio.

SUMMARY:SAAACAM April Film Club “The Blind Stigma: Mental Health within the Black Community”
DESCRIPTION:“The Blind Stigma” is an award-winning film that made Canadian history by being the first documentary produced in Canada that discusses mental health within the Black community. It chronicles and testifies the stories of five individuals on their trials and triumphs with mental health. Each story is told bravely and effectively with additional context provided by mental health professionals\, religious leaders\, caregivers\, and your everyday citizen. Within the Black community\, mental health is deemed as a ‘Swept Under The Rug’ stigma that has been creating false illusions and assumptions for a long time. \n  \nThat stigma is the core component of the Black community’s response to mental illness\, and therefore those who suffer from mental illness are less likely to seek treatment. As a result very few studies have been done on the impact of mental illness in the Black community. This film powerfully removes the veil of shame that clouds the topic of mental illness in the Black community\, challenges the misconception\, and gives a voice to those living with mental illness. \nDirectors: Stacy-Ann Buchanan\, 2023\, NR\, 60 mins \n  \nImmediately following the film\, join us for the lively panel discussion with our panelists who will provide insight as well as mental health resources available to the San Antonio community. \n  \nADMISSION IS FREE\, BUT PRE-REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED!\nThe doors to The Little Carver open at 5:30pm\, and the film begins at 6pm.
