SUMMARY:St. James AMEC Culture Crossing Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Discovered unexpectedly during the restoration of San Pedro Creek in 2020\, the original foundations of the St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church revealed a powerful chapter of San Antonio’s Reconstruction-era history. Founded in 1867\, St. James AME Church was the first AME church in San Antonio and became a center for worship\, education\, civil rights\, political participation\, and community leadership for generations of Black San Antonians. \nNow transformed into the St. James AMEC Culture Crossing\, the site features “Presence of the Past\,” a large-scale public art installation by internationally recognized artist Gordon Huether\, alongside the Community Engagement Pavilion featuring poetry and community storytelling by San Antonio Poet Laureate Emeritus Andrea “Vocab” Sanderson. Together\, these works create a space for reflection\, gathering\, and celebration rooted in the voices and histories of the community. \nAn evening discussion exploring the history\, cultural significance\, and continuing impact of St. James AME Church and the San Pedro Creek site. SUMMARY:Freedom: The Soundtrack of 250 Years
DESCRIPTION:In commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary\, and 100 years of celebrating Black History\, the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM) will present Freedom: The Soundtrack of 250 Years—a transformative evening of music\, narration\, and reflection at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. This program explores the vital role of Black musical traditions as expressions of power\, protest\, and community from the nation’s founding to the present. \nThe evening centers the San Antonio Gospel Heritage Choir\, whose repertoire of Negro spirituals and gospel anthems brings forward the encoded messages\, communal strength\, and enduring hope embedded in early African American song traditions. They will be joined by the Grammy Award–winning Sounds of Blackness\, whose genre-spanning artistry bridges gospel\, jazz\, R&B\, and soul to illuminate stories of resilience and liberation across generations.
